What do Shopify tags
Shopify tags are hidden from your customers.
They are present in your administration area to help you organize content.
For example, if you have seasoned store deals, like products that are usually sold on Xmas – you can tag them with xmas
tag. Once Xmas is over – you can quickly stop promoting those products and focus on another tag group.
What are Shopify tags used for
Shopify allows to add tags on:
- Products
- Transfers
- Customers
- Blog posts
- Orders
If you have a lot of customers and want to organize them, you can add tags on them like:
ambassador
– a person who bought most compared to any other customerad-deal
– to mark people who came from some advertisement you executed (like Facebook ads)-
referal
– to mark people who got to our store through referrals newsletter
to mark people who subscribed or are interested in getting newsletters- and so on.
The same stands for Products. You might have seasoned products you might want to mark or better organization (summer clothes
, winter clothes
and etc) or even mark with statuses for your assistant – to review
, to update
, to order more
.
Are Shopify tags case sensitive
Tags are not case sensitive. This means that Gift
and gift
are the same tag.
In order to differentiate tags, you can use numbers or hyphens. Prefix tags with year
, version number
, season
or any other common attribute.
How do tags work in Shopify
Every element on your Shopify Dashboard (product, order, category and so on) can have a special group name – tag.
It is very similar to hashtags you can see on other platforms (Twitter, Youtube, Facebook), but tags in Shopify are private and visible only to store managers.
This way, you can group/ungroup tags in a way you like, and use internal or hard-to-understand for other names.
How to add tags on Shopify

From Shopify store admin page, open Products tab and click Add product
button.
On the right sidebar, you will see Tags

How to add or remove Shopify tags in bulk
Each product, order, customer or blog post index page will have checkboxes where you can select multiple or all items:

Then click More actions
and choose either Add tags
or Remove tags
:

If you want to edit tags in bulk – see the following section.
How to edit tags on Shopify
You can only add or remove tags in Shopify.
You can’t rename Shopify tags. But removing the old one and adding a new tag is basically the same renaming.
If you have mistyped the tag name, just remove old tag by clicking on X button near the tag name:

Next just add a new tag.
If a manual task like this takes too long – use the bulk tags assignment discussed above.
How to delete tags on Shopify
In any Dashboard page where you see a list of tags, each tag is suffixed with X button you can click and remove the tag from the content type:

Do Shopify tags affect SEO
Shopify tags are not displayed on the frontend (not visible to your buyers).
They are also not visible to search engines. For this reason, they do not affect SEO.
Meta tags – that is a different thing from Product or Order tags. See the section down below on how you could benefit from meta tags.
How to add meta tags on Shopify
Open Shopify Dashboard and enter Products
section. From there choose any product to edit or create a new one.
At the bottom of the form you will see Search engine listing
block. Click Edit
.

Not only you can edit what search engines will see, but you can also preview how your customers searching for your products will see your product.
Be sure to:
- Product name with a brand displayed in the title
- In the description field list any variants you offer (colors, sizes, packages, etc.)
- Check typos
- Make sure the text fits nicely and grabs attention
Do Shopify tags help SEO? Meta tags – yes. Simple product (and other content types) tags – no (as they are hidden from your users and search engines).
Conclusion
In this article, we learned a few things:
- Shopify tags are only visible to store managers but not to shop visitors or search engines
- You can add and delete tags. For edits (renaming) you need to remove old tag name and create a new name.
- There is bulk tags management tool in Shopify Dashboard you can use to speed up the process.
- Tags do not add any value for SEO, but meta tags – do.
